Gene Anderson Remembers the Thrill!
Eugene Anderson was also an innovative businessman. He opened a drive-through window in 1980, well before the chain stores in the area added them. He offered wheelchairs and other Durable Medical Equipment (DME) equipment too. But Anderson's Drug Store also felt like an old country store in some ways, with peaches, watermelons and sometimes hard-to-find medications.
Gene Anderson Drug Store, Elizabethtown, NC
During his almost 50 years as a retail pharmacist in Elizabethtown, Gene Anderson developed a reputation for providing quality health care. He was highly regarded by physicians who applauded him for recommending alternative meds for patients whose insurance wouldn't cover an expensive prescription. The DEA chose his store over four others in town for prescription drug disposal. Local healthcare charities thanked him for finding coupons and using generics to help stretch their funds. And his fellow pharmacists nominated him for numerous wards.
In 1969, Gene and his new wife moved to Elizabethtown where he worked for a while with a co-owner, eventually opening his own business as Anderson's Drug Store. Gene owned the business until he sold it in 2019 to his youngest daughter.
